The Japanese macaques of Kinkazan Island embrace each other in the ventro-ventral position and rock their bodies back and forth. This type of embrace is functionally similar but a little different from that of the Japanese macaques of Yakushima Island. This regional difference is considered to be a social convention among Japanese macaques, which is equivalent to greetings between humans.
