The Japanese tiger snake has unique defensive organs, called nuchal glands, under the skin of the neck region. Nuchal glands contain toxic steroids. This snake shows unique defensive displays such as neck flattening, neck arching, and dorsal facing posture, which would enhance the predation evasion effects of the nuchal gland toxins.
