1898 June The Departments of Mathematics, Physics, and Pure Chemistry (Chemistry) were established.
1914 July The College of Science and Engineering was divided into the College of Science and the College of Engineering.
1919 Feb The College of Science was renamed the Faculty of Science.
1921 Apr The Departments of Astronomy, Geophysics, Zoology, and Botany were established.
1922 Apr The Department of Geology and Mineralogy and Otsu Hydrobiological Station (the former Hydrobiological Station, Faculty of Medicine) were established.
  July Marine Biological Research Station* was established. (*It was renamed Seto Marine Biological Laboratory in 1937.)
1926 Oct Beppu Geophysical Research Laboratory was established.
1928 Feb The Astronomical Observatory was established.

1930 Oct Abuyama Seismological Observatory was established.
1947 Oct Kyoto Imperial University was renamed Kyoto University.
1953 Apr The Graduate School of Science, consisting of eight divisions, was established.
1964 Apr The Plant Ecological Research Station was established.
1965 Apr The Divisions of Physics I and Physics II were established due to reorganization.
1967 Apr The Department of Biophysics was established.
1970 Apr Osakayama Crustal Deformation Observatory was established.
1971 Apr The Division of Biophysics was established.
1972 May Tokushima Seismological Observatory was established.
1973 Apr The Regional Center for Earthquake Prediction was established.
1975 Apr The Division of Mathematical Sciences (independent division) and the Research Center for Instrumental Analysis were established.
1977 Apr The Institute of Paleolimnology and Paleoenvironment on Lake Biwa (with a ten-year term limit) and the Data Analysis Center for Geomagnetism and Space Magnetism were established.
1981 Apr The Laboratory for Climatic Change Research was established with a ten-year term limit.
1986 Apr The Division of Primatology (independent division) was established.
1987 Mar The Institute of Paleolimnology and Paleoenvironment on Lake Biwa was closed.
1990 June Abuyama Seismological Observatory, Osakayama Crustal Deformation Observatory, Tokushima Seismological Observatory, and the Regional Center for Earthquake Prediction were closed.
1991 Mar The Laboratory for Climatic Change Research was closed.
  Apr Otsu Hydrobiological Station and the Plant Ecological Research Station were closed.
1993 Apr The Center for Molecular and Developmental Biology was established with a ten-year term limit.
1994 Apr The nine departments were closed and reorganized into the Department of Science. Due to reorganization of the Graduate School, the Divisions of Mathematics, Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Chemistry were established.
1995 Apr Due to reorganization of the Graduate School, the Divisions of Physics and Astronomy, and Biological Sciences were established. The Graduate School of Science became an independent graduate school.
1997 Apr Beppu Geophysical Research Laboratory and Aso Volcanological Laboratory were closed to be merged as the Institute for Geothermal Sciences.
1998 Apr The six facilities of the Faculty of Science were changed to be attached to the Graduate School of Science.
2002 Mar The Research Center for Instrumental Analysis and the Low-Temperature Laboratory were closed to be merged as the Research Center for Low Temperature and Materials Sciences.
2003 Mar The Center for Molecular and Developmental Biology was closed.
2004 Apr National University Corporation Kyoto University was established.
2018 Apr Okayama Observatory was established.
2019 Apr The Center for Science Adventure and Collaborative Research Advancement was established.
